A crown (also known as a cap) is a covering that covers the whole tooth surface altering it to its initial size and shape. A crown guards and restores the tooth’s structure without any other options of restorations.

Although there are several crowns, porcelain (tooth colored crown) are the most popular because they resemble your natural teeth. They are highly durable and long-lasting. Porcelain crowns are customized to the shape, size, and color or your teeth, giving you a natural, long-lasting radiant smile.

What does getting a crown involve?

The crown procedure typically requires at least two appointments. During your first appointment, your dentist will take several highly accurate molds (or impressions) of your teeth, and it will be used to create your custom crown. Next, the mold will also be used to create a temporary crown that will stay on your tooth for at least two weeks until your dentist’s dental laboratory fabricates your permanent crown.

During when the tooth is numb, the dentist will prepare the tooth. The dentist will start by removing any decay and shaping the surface to fit the crown properly. The temporary crown will be implanted with special bonding cement, and your bite will be checked to ensure you are biting properly.

At your second appointment, the temporary crown will be removed, your natural tooth will be cleaned, and the newly fabricated crown will be precisely placed to guarantee the spacing and bite are perfect.

You will be given care instructions and encouraged to have regular dental visits to check your new crown.
