Dental Exams & Cleanings
Dental Exam
Your dentist will provide you with a comprehensive dental exam during your dental visit. At routine check-up exams, your dentist and hygienist will perform the following:
Examination of Diagnostic X-rays (radiographs): Essential for detecting deteriorations, abnormal tumors, benign cysts, and bone loss. X-rays also help define tooth and root positions.
Oral Cancer Screening: Examine the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums for any signs of oral cancer.
Gum Disease Evaluation: Review the gums and bone nearby the teeth for any indications of periodontal disease.
Examination of Tooth Decay: Tooth surfaces will be thoroughly inspected for corrosion with special dental instruments.
Examination of Existing Restorations: Reduce current fillings, crowns, etc.
Professional Dental Cleaning
Registered Dental Hygienists usually perform professional dental cleanings (dental prophylaxis). Your cleaning appointment will include a dental exam and the following:
Removal of Calculus (Tartar): Calculus is a severe plaque left on the tooth for some time and is now firmly attached to the tooth surface. Calculus forms above and below the gum line and can only be extracted with specialized dental instruments.
Removal of Plaque: Plaque is a gluey, almost transparent film that forms on the teeth. The build-up consists of living bacteria, food debris, and saliva. This inflammation is the source of periodontal disease!
Teeth Polishing: Expel stain and plaque that is not excluded during tooth brushing and scaling.
